Huma’s been a mystic since an early age. She was interested in the mysteries of life as far back as she can remember. Asking questions such as, “where did I come from?”, “who am I, really?”, “why are some people suffering and others seem to be happy?” and the biggest one of all: “where is God!” were the sort of questions she was asking while playing with her young friends before she reached the age of 10. That same interest was further nurtured due to her travels away and outside of the country she was born in, Pakistan, at an early age as well. She lived and studied in Europe for some years. That provided her with the valuable exposure to cultures new to her then, and helped her to gain one of her first insights into life: all people are the same. They only look and behave different but underneath it all, when all is said and done, they are all the same.” She learned tolerance, and appreciation of others in those teen years. Her journey then brought her to be educated in several different educational institutions in several countries as she continued to expand her thinking and her mind, always filled with questions, seeking answers. Her first Bachelors in Psychology and French was a product of three different universities, from three different cities and two different countries. Such is the diversity in thinking that you find in Huma when you meet her. She volunteered for a while in an institute for the so-called mentally handicapped individuals and realized from working there, that her initial assessment of life was validated there: namely, that if you can approach another with compassion and with understanding, with empathy and unconditional respect, that individual will and does communicate with you, beyond the veil of “insanity”.
Her passion for understanding human behaviour and her desire to help people took her to the United States where she received her second Bachelors also in Psychology, with a minor in French. By now she had integrated her academic knowledge into a clear vision of what to do in the future: to help people who are generally well adjusted and encounter life’s myriad of problems with which they often need some assistance. That dream took her into graduate studies in Counseling Psychology – a turning point in her life. She did her internship from the University counseling centre which further honed her counseling skills by working with senior Psychologists and learning as always, from their professionalism, expertise and wisdom. She began to work at the same counseling centre after receiving her Master’s degree and after three years there, moved to work at Community College of Philadelphia as Staff Counselor, providing much the same counseling services as she did at University of Towson, Maryland, counseling centre: personal, career, educational. She primarily provided counseling services to those adult students of the college community for whom English was a second language.
Since 1999, Huma has been providing counseling services to professional immigrants to Canada, in the GTA. While in this capacity, she began to realize, that something significant was missing in the psychological theories that she used as her foundation for helping others. She found it hard to believe that when it came to assisting others with their problems of psychological, emotional nature or those related to career decision making, that the field of Psychology had all the answers. Her quest in finding the answer to this enigma resulted in her re-discovering, this time, at the conscious level, her mystical interests in life. She realized the missing link was the spiritual aspect, not the religious aspect but the innate spirituality that dwells within each person.
Huma’s counseling style is to facilitate clients’ progress by helping him or her find the answers from within, instead of suggesting possibilities or telling the client what they should do. Holding the firm belief that all answers are within each person for every thing they need help with, Huma has helped thousands of people from all walks of life, from every part of the world.
Huma has been practicing Reiki and other metaphysical techniques to further assist others along with continuing to use her counseling and therapeutic skills since five years. In this capacity, she has helped several people in the last four or five years in “finding themselves”, in understanding their life purpose, in learning to accept and love themselves just as they are, right where they are.
