WORD ORIGINS

SerendipityWe are indebted to the English author Horace Walpole for the word serendipity, which he coined in one of the 3,000 or more letters on which his literary reputation primarily rests. In a letter of January 28, 1754, Walpole says that “this discovery, indeed, is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word.” Walpole formed the word on an old name for Sri Lanka, Serendip. He explained that this name was part of the title of “a silly fairy tale, called The Three Princes of Serendip: as their highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.”

“The wise stand out because they see themselves as part of the Whole. They shine because they don’t want to impress. They achieve great things because they don’t look for recognition. Their wisdom is contained in what they are, not their opinions. They refuse to argue, so no-one argues with them.”
- Lao Tzu

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness and indecisiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too … Whatever you can do … begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin in NOW.”
- Goethe

“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”
- Peter F. Drucker

“Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.”
- William Arthur Ward
